Tahlequah is located in the “Lakes Country” of Northeastern Oklahoma in Cherokee County,and was founded as a capital of the original Cherokee Nation in 1838 to welcome those Cherokee forced west on the Trail of Tears.
A likely origin for the name Tahlequah, is that it is named for an ancient eastern Cherokee town of Great Tellico, the English spelling of Cherokee Talikwa, the meaning of which is lost, although some trace it to the word tel-i-quah which is interpreted as “plains”.
Today, Tahlequah’s population is over 15 thousand, and the main campus of Northeastern State University is located here. The City of Tahlequah is the oldest municipality in Oklahoma, and Tahlequah is a growing, vibrant city offering a unique blend of history, culture, and commerce for its residents to enjoy. Located at the western boundary of the Ozark Mountains and surrounded by lakes, rivers, and breathtaking natural beauty.
